Evidence-based practice provides athletic trainers with the tools for locating evidence and for evaluating the quality of that evidence, so that they can benefit from the work of other health care professionals. New or updated evaluations and treatments for a more effective return to play are being published in literature more and more frequently. Deciding which of these will benefit the trainer’s patient is the tricky part.
For most athletic trainers, the idea of keeping up to date on all the latest scientific information relevant their daily practice seems almost impossible. The pure volume of literature published relating to sports medicine is growing daily, but the time to read that literature is decreasing. The primary goal of EBP is providing athletic trainers with the necessary tools to quickly and easily find useful information and then analyze the quality of that information and apply it to their specific situation.
